THE SOMERVILLES "LOVE, LOSS & MURDER" $25 Hot new release from local bluegrass band fronted by banjo legend Peter Somerville, who has played with more people than many of us have had hot dinners, along with king-hell dobro wizard Pete Fidler, Alex Aronsten who plays great guitar and writes and sings songs that wouldn't sound out of place on Gram Parsons/Rick Roberts-era Flying Burrito Brothers albums, and Rod Boothroyd, who keeps it all earthed with his double bass. New originals from all band members, including a couple of beautifully appealing instrumentals from Peter Somerville and Pete Fidler, shared vocals, some great covers, tight harmonies and some blistering picking (there's nothing quite like the sound of 21 strings all going like buggery in perfect unison - except perhaps 29 -) along with good humour and great feel in abundance. Unreservedly recommended! |
